I was at this visit the same as every other; mesmerized by the potpourri of items that filled her room. I was always allowed to move around freely looking and touching things as she regaled me with stories and tidbits from her life. She usually did this while tatting something beautiful into being or re-caning the seat of a tired old chair.
This time was different, she moved with careful attention as she packed away her hooks and threads. A sad wistful smile passed her lips as she told me she was rapidly losing her vision and memory and that I could no longer come to visit.
In that moment I was bereft and stricken by a sadness not fully realized until her 80+ year old beauty no longer graced my world. What a treasure I had lost when my aunt passed on.
