Nana had become so fragile over the last months. Dark shadows under her eyes gave proof that she wasn't sleeping well. Keeping a vigil was taking its toll. I would hear her soft footsteps in the night as she walked through the hall and down the stairs at odd hours. Sometimes she would come into my room and stand over my bed watching me. She always thought I was asleep. I rarely was. I didn't need that much sleep anymore, I only pretended for Nana's sake. I could feel the rampant changes taking place in my body that had not yet become physically noticeable. The time was nearing when they would and then the transformation would be complete. I had been spending every available minute learning all I could about this mutating virus in hopes that I could control it in myself. I realized how wrong I was when Nana came into my room. Sitting on the edge of my bed, breathing raggedly and sweating profusely, I saw the tremor as she brought her hand to her mouth in shocked horror.

Well, reading this just after Halloween still creeped me out. Love the cliffhanger ending!
